Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for cooking)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp thyme (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into four equal-sized patties, pressing a small indentation in the center to prevent puffing during cooking.

Step 2: Cook the Patties

  1. Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook the hamburger steaks for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well to coat. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  3. Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  4. Simmer the gravy for 5-7 minutes until it thickens.

Step 4: Combine and Serve

  1. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Simmer for 3-5 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  2. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra juicy patties, don’t overwork the ground beef while mixing.
  • If the gravy is too thick, add a splash of beef broth to thin it out.
  • Substitute gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour for a gluten-free version.
  • Make it keto by using almond flour instead of breadcrumbs and xanthan gum instead of flour.
