Ingredients
Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- 1 egg, beaten
- ⅓ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for cooking)
For the Onion Gravy:
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp thyme (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into four equal-sized patties, pressing a small indentation in the center to prevent puffing during cooking.
Step 2: Cook the Patties
- Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the hamburger steaks for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well to coat. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme.
- Simmer the gravy for 5-7 minutes until it thickens.
Step 4: Combine and Serve
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Simmer for 3-5 minutes to let the flavors meld.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Enjoy!
Notes
- For extra juicy patties, don’t overwork the ground beef while mixing.
- If the gravy is too thick, add a splash of beef broth to thin it out.
- Substitute gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour for a gluten-free version.
- Make it keto by using almond flour instead of breadcrumbs and xanthan gum instead of flour.
