Ingredients
Scale
For the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce (for extra umami, optional)
- ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika (optional for depth of flavor)
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or Italian seasoning)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 3 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- ¼ cup butter
- ½ cup milk (or heavy cream for extra creaminess)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the potato cubes and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper, then mash until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste. Cover and set aside.
Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté for another 2-3 minutes until softened.
Step 3: Make the Gravy
- Push the beef mixture to one side of the pan and melt butter in the empty space.
- Sprinkle in flour, whisking continuously for 1 minute until golden brown.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, black pepper, paprika, and thyme. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy
- Spoon the creamy mashed potatoes onto plates and top with the beef and gravy mixture.
- Garnish with fresh parsley or chives (optional) and serve warm!
Notes
- For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream to the mashed potatoes or stir in shredded cheese.
- Make it gluten-free by using cornstarch instead of flour to thicken the gravy.
- Want more veggies? Add mushrooms, peas, or carrots to the gravy for extra flavor and nutrition.
- Leftovers: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
