Ingredients

Scale

For the Sloppy Joe Meat:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 small bell pepper, finely diced (red or green)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

For the Signature Sauce:

  • ¾ cup (180ml) tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup (60ml) ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (or maple syrup for a richer taste)
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp chili powder (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For Serving:

  • 4 brioche buns or hamburger buns, toasted
  • Butter for toasting (optional)
  • Pickles, cheese, or coleslaw (optional toppings)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Aromatics: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the diced onion and bell pepper in a little oil until softened, about 3–4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

  2. Brown the Beef: Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain any excess grease.

  3. Make the Signature Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper.

  4. Simmer to Perfection: Pour the sauce over the cooked beef, stirring well to coat. Let it simmer for 10–15 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the meat beautifully.

  5. Toast the Buns: While the meat simmers, butter the brioche buns and toast them in a pan until golden brown.

  6. Assemble & Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns and top with optional pickles, cheese, or coleslaw. Serve immediately and enjoy!
